For many years, conventional metal braces were the only treatment available to correct crooked or misaligned teeth. And while very effective when administered correctly, the discomfort and appearance of metal braces often deterred many of my patients from seeking this corrective therapy.
Over the past decade, an alternative brace therapy—Invisilign® braces—has rapidly grown in popularity with both my patients and the orthodontists I partner with. Often referred to as “invisible” braces, Invisalign offers many advantages that make them a great choice for qualifying patients.
The Invisalign Pros:
Appearance
The primary advantage listed by those who choose Invisalign is “appearance.” Unlike the the jagged, unsightly food-catching hardware used on metal braces, Invisalign® braces are clear and fitted to the shape of your teeth. In most cases, they are virtually undetectable.
Comfort
Invisalign Braces can easily be removed and inserted by the wearer, so taking them off for a short time to eat is fast and easy. Having braces that can be removed also makes maintaining dental hygiene after meals a faster, easier process.
Less Damaging
Because conventional braces are hard and often include sharp metal components, they can cause damage to tongue, inner cheeks, teeth and gums. Metal braces can also mask or spawn tooth decay. Invisalign Braces are smooth-edged plastic “trays’ formed from a safe, FDA approved material. Damage from abrasion and trapped bacteria is reducing or eliminated, as are any concerns over allergic reactions to metal.
Better Planning
Metal braces require educated guesswork as the orthodontist manually makes adjustments with the hopes of achieving the desired results. Invisalign® therapy trays and the results they produce—are designed through a computer program. The program can accurately predict results, and also pinpoint how long the treatment will take.
The Invisalign Cons:
Diligence
The biggest setback associated with Invisalign is self-discipline. For Invisalign to work, the wearer must strictly follow the wear schedule prescribed by the orthodontist. This includes changing to the “next” Invisalign tray approximately every two weeks or as instructed.
Cost
Invisalign can cost a slight bit more, but for most patients, the comfort and appearance advantages are well worth the additional investment.
Speaking lisp
Because of the way Invisalign braces attach to the teeth, the relationship between teeth and tongue is temporarily altered. This often results in a slight lisp at the beginning of wearing. This effect usually fades quickly.
Conclusion
While Invisalign will not correct all tooth conditions, it is often an effective, minimally-invasive method for correcting a crooked, misaligned smile.
